Fun and interesting
I bought this for my 7 year old sister...she loves it! She is learning about science without even knowing it and loves making the different concoctions!

Fun for Kids seven and up
"The incredible secret formula book" gives plenty of neat little things to keep you and your kids busy on those boring summer days.

Most of the things in this book use items you probably all ready have in your home: paper, corn starch, sugar and various food items.

This book details things like How to make invisible ink or disappering ink. If that doesn't interest you there's making chalk out of egg shells or how to recylce paper. you can even make "Mutant slime" a kids favorite. Don't like mutant Slime? how 'bout psylly slime or miss muppet slime? victal slime or udderly Gross slime? lots of fun for kids and thier mom and or dad.

Kids' Favorite
This book has become my children's favorite. It is full of cheap ideas that the kid's love to experiment with. I would recommend this book to all parents.

Introduction to Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, An
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (09 February, 2001)
Author: John D. Winter
Average review score:

One of the best resources on this subject!
As a former student of John Winters, I can honestly say that this book does a terrific job with a subject that can be very complicated! After reading this text (and taking his class!) I came away with a clear understanding of the concepts discussed. And, of course, a little humor here and there helps. The chapters flow well together yet can be read individually, and I plan on keeping this text for future reference. Highly recommended!

A great book for all studing geology
This is a really great book for all students who want to learn sometfing about igneous and metamorphic petrology. Written exeptionally well, with good sence of humor, it covers all the topics related to the formation and evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks, gives you comprehensive (and comprehensible -- that is also inportant) information about rock types, their classification, textures, structures, rock forming minerals, magmaism, volcanism, metamorphism, their relationships to the tectonic settings and global lithosphere plate motion, etc. It contains so much useful information that can even been used as a handbook for those who work in or study geology, petrology, geochemistry, and geophysics. Reading this book greatly improves your understanding of the subject, so, eventually, you feel you can easily get complicated concepts and ideas, even find beauty in them, and hence enjoy your reading -- the situation which is not usually met for petrology texts.
I used this book as a textbook when I took a course in petrology last year -- and it was great help for me. And I would like to say thanks to John Winter for his really good work.

Interesting and useful
This book is well worth its cost. It is full of information about the many fascinating minerals found on our planet's surface and below.

Introduction to the Rock Forming Minerals
Published in Paperback by Livingstone, Churchill (01 January, 1966)
Author: W A Deer
Average review score:

Essential Mineral Reference
Includes chapters on every major rock-forming mineral, with sections on structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features, and paragenesis for almost every mineral. All this is presented in a clear and organized fashion.

Extremely useful reference book. As a grad student studying mineralogy, I couldn't do without it. A+

An Introduction to the Rock Forming Minerals
An great book. I have the 13th impression of this book published in 1982. We used this book in second year mineralogy and found it very useful not only in mineraology but throughout the remaining years of our geology program at University. The book is easy to use and has all the different groups, ortho- ring silicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, framework silicates and non silicates and provides information pertaining to properties, crystal structure, chemistry and paragenesis.

A must if you study minerals
This book is an absolute must for anyone working with minerals in any way. Beeing an introduction to rockforming minerals it is very conprehensive. It is very valuable not only as a textbook but also as a handbook in the lab. As the title says it covers the rockforming minerals so dont expect to find exotic minearls. You can though expect to find a relatively detailed introduction to the most important minerals. It far surpasses any student minaralogy to my knowledge.

It Came From Memphis
Published in Paperback by Atria Books (November, 2001)
Author: Robert Gordon
Average review score:

It's either this or Will and Grace...you make the call.
This is the kind of book I dream about. When I look for my next read, I look for a book that is 1) passionate 2) not pretentious and not totally mainstream, and 3) about quirky (in a trashy and at least slightly out of control way) people and things. Sounds simple enough, but lord knows it ain't as easy to find a book with those characteristics as you might think. But Robert Gordon has torn it up and come through for us. Really, it's amazing that this book is still in print because it's "target audience" must consist of about thirty people. And therein lies its beauty. Imagine something as idiosyncratic as a zine, but, unlike a zine, not poorly written! Also, it doesn't hurt that a nice sized portion of the book is devoted to the godhead, Alex Chilton, which means a lot to us Chilton-ites since no real definitive bio exists. Of course, there's tons else besides Alex--take for example pro wrestlers, hippie bluesmen, and a cool-as-hell photographer--but if you don't dig Alex, maybe you should pass on this anyway and go and see if Will and Grace is available on DVD yet. Your type sickens me.

Gordon's It Came from Memphis is a must read for music fans.
Gordon's It Came from Memphis helps to unravel the rich heritage of a city whose musical heritage is largely overlooked save for BB King and Elvis Presley. He succesfullly attempts to expose the politics, racism, and situations of circumstance that fueled Memphis to become what it is today both musically and socially. A young gifted author whose style is both easily readable and profound, Gordon offers a book that is a must read for any fan of modern music. I recommend this one highly.

WOW
If you've never been to Memphis, this book will either make you drive straight to the airport or convince you to stay far, far away. Gordon's round-up of Memphis eccentrics, flops, and genuises is short on Elvis and B.B. King, and long on Alex Chilton, Dewey Phillips, Jim Dickinson, and Furry Lewis. An indispensible and hilarious guide to America's deep-fried music capital.

It Happened in Monterey: Modern Rock's Defining Moment
Published in Paperback by Brittania Press (June, 2003)
Author: Elaine Mayes
Average review score:

Almost like you were there !
Missed the Monterey Festival, however this book almost takes you right there - amidst the audience, the performers -both in the crowd and onstage. In color and b+w. HIGHLY recommended for Dead, Who, & Hendrix fans !

Superb Original Photography
Elaine Mayes has captured the exitement and nostalgia of the '60's "Summer of Love" with this excellent book about the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Packed with original and little seen photos of artists and audience, the book also has many quotations and comments that complement the narration throughout by the Author.
The book has introductions by Lou Adler and Derek Taylor, and covers the whole three days of events, with rare and candid pictures in each section. If you are a fan of genuine 'pop' and 'sixties underground', you will enjoy the close up sharp photos of such personalities as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Ravi Shankar, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Mamas and Papas, Country Joe and the Fish, along with Otis Redding, Simon and Garfunkel,Paul Butterfield Band, Steve Miller Band, Canned Heat, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Eric Burdon and the Animals, and many more that appeared on that special weekend in music history.
This 190 page book is beautifully printed in full color and also includes original artwork and posters by Tom Wilkes used in the Festival. Well worth the money for a keepsake book that immediately transports the reader back in time to that psychedelic, carefree era.

The Best Documentation of Monterey Pop to Date
Elaine Mayes really brings the majesty and the momentous occasion that was the first ever rock music festival and soical happening, The Monterey Pop Festival, to the reader in photographs and in words. The book is beautifully designed and unfolds in a way that the reader can either perfectly recount those days in June of 1967 perfectly or for the novice, it is an accurate, historical journal.

I gave this book to a friend of mine that had attended Monterey Pop and she cried as she recalled the days of peace, love and rock & roll.

It's Not Only Rock & Roll: Popular Music in the Lives of Adolescents (Hampton Press Communication Series)
Published in Hardcover by Hampton Pr (January, 1998)
Authors: Peter G. Christenson and Donald F. Roberts
Average review score:

I liked it anyway . . .
Peter was my professor and I had to read the book for his class, but I liked it anyway. It was very interesting and concerns an issue that is very important in today's world. It is even an easy read for those outside the academic world (unlike books by certain other professors I could name). Thanks, Peter! And go ahead and get Nina that American Girl.

World's greatest book.
I am the author's daughter and I think this is a wonderful book. It inspired me so much I wrote a song about Don Roberts, the co-author. Go out and buy the book. Dad will be happy and I will get another American Girl!

Good, readable distillation of the research
This is a good book! It thoughfully distills all the current research on the effects of popular music on teens and does so without the hype or hysteria of the press. Required reading for anyone who has concerns about the effect of music on youth.

John Lennon: A Story in Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Thunder Bay Press (01 January, 2001)
Author: Terry Burrows
Average review score:

Unpublished photos make this a gem
So many Beatles-related books trot out the same photos, again and again. You all know the ones I'm talking about. But this book is decidedly and refreshingly different. I have many Lennon biographies in my library and this book contains many previously unpublished photos of John, especially ones from his childhood and in the period 1975-1980. The paper quality in the book is exceptional and is thick, glossy material which results in a stunning display of black and white vibrancy. The text is incidental but adds flavor and gives you the year each photo was taken.

The photos of the Beatles are a little weaker, and contain many previously known shots. But the individual pictures of John are outstanding. Consider the beautiful profile view on the cover of the book, taken in 1967. This is just a sampling of what this treasure trove has to offer. There are many other such nuggets within the covers. Any serious fan of John Lennon will adore this book and get many hours of pleasure perusing these photos of a great cultural and musical icon. John himself would scoff at such a description, but it's oh so true.

The most important 60's figure
If anything the importance and influence Mr. Lennon have been underestimated. This fatherless, motherless working-class boy wandered Liverpool as a near street urchin in care of his Aunt Mimi. his longings for what we would call boring middle class familial comfort ar palpable in such songs as "Mother" ans "Julia." His first son was named for his "bolter" of a mother. after 8 years of heroin addition ensconsed in the Dakota with Yoko he emerged, produced "Double Fantasy" and was gunned down by Mark David Chapman, probably a brainwashed agent of the US government. These pictures are among our relics and can be treasured.

ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR - IN MY LIFE
This book is sure to delight any reader from inveterate Beatles fan to interested learner. This book chronicles the life of John Lennon from his boyhood days in Liverpool up to his tragic death in 1980.

The photographs capture John at all phases of his life. One can imagine the high spirited young boy who declared to all and sundry that he was a genius and special (and he was right), to the founder of the world's number one band. I like the way this book captures John as more than the artist he was. I like the pictures of John with his sons, with his first wife Cynthia and with his soulmate and wife, Yoko. One feels that they are taking a Magical Mystery Tour with the man who literally made the world listen.

This book is such a treat. I can't recommend it highly enough.

JRNLS80s

Authors: Lee Ranaldo and Leah Singer
Average review score:

Lee is a fantastic writer... Wheres the next decades worth??
this book is amazing... reflections on life, love, loss and highways. as lee says, you cant always call [sonic youth] music, but you can usually call it sound. well i cant always call this book poetry, but anyone who reads it will see the power of lees words. 5 stars!

best book i've read in ages
this book is really cool. lee is an excellent writer and anyone interested in his, or sonic youth's work should read it. the photography is great too.

notorious rockin' lee dismounts with deadly guile, oncemore!
fans of lee and fans of leah alike will always remember those rocket screaming, headcase creaming, psycho reaming, and convulsion dreaming days of volcanic glory. hey, don't we all? even still, lee's acounts easily rile old ghosts thought long dead and trampled on. go lee! (goalie! heh-heh.)

so anyway. any fan of lee, leah, or SONIC YOUTH will enjoy this book gluttonously. lee's writing style is jacked up, true, but usually in the best way. the very pages come to life and strangle and intimidate the reader with ruthless efficiency, rendering them stunned and confused and feeling momentarily adrift in their surroundings. a truly thrilling congregation of words and pictures.

a minor drawback would be the book's tendency to cause temporary consentration disruptions, and temporary short-term memory loss. that, and it's super harsh.

in closing i highly recommend this literature. it, frankly, is perfect.

FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The life of Elvis Presley
Published in Unknown Binding by Timur Pub. ()
Author: Sean Shaver
Average review score:

Sean Shaver: A Credit to Elvis Fans
Sean Shaver was Elvis' unofficial official photographer. He was never on the payroll but attended many of Elvis' concerts in the 70's and followed him around at his homes. Don't get the idea that Sean was some kind of stalker- far from it. By his own estimation Sean took about 80,000 photos and this is the first of 8 books that put them together. The text is written by Hal Noland and his primary sources were Charlie Hodge, Dick Grob, and Billy Smith, 3 men who all worked with Elvis for many years. Smith is even Elvis' cousin. Shaver provided the photographs and they are the best part of this book. Not only did Sean take pictures, he has bought and traded for others and some of those appear here too. You get everything from candids from the 40's and 50's to the last concert in 1977. While not the biggest of Sean's books it is probably the most comprehensive. If you want big, check out the Elvis Book series. (They weigh 7 or 8 pounds and are huge). The Life of Elvis Presley won't educate you if you are a long time fan but that isn't the point of this book. It is a puff piece with lost of good stories and tons of great pictures. ...

The Best Elvis book ever
I've read them all and collect only the best. This is the first book by Sean Shaver and is called the Elvis Bible by the fans. This hardback book came out in 1979. Hundreds of books about Elvis have followed but none come close. There are almost 1,000 color photos in this book and it is printed on glossy paper. If my house catches on fire I will grab this on the way out. It has been out of print for two decades and is hard to find but grab it at any price if you can find one. I understand brand new copies can be obtained from Sean if you can find him.

superb!!
this one is actually one of the best ( if not THE best Elvis-photobook ever !!) 10 stars!
